Vortex
The Vortex series is about sex and chaos. It was partially inspired by Khuzami’s time on the dance floors of gay circuit parties. Among the muscular bodies pressed against each other, she felt bathed in a sea of testosterone. She was also inspired by the hypersexuality of anime. Yet on an aesthetic level, the paintings are celebrations of pure visual chaos–– a riot of color and kinetic energy provoked by simply piling objects on top of each other. It could be the messy jumble of a child’s toy chest, or a rummage bin in a secondhand store. Toys fall into accidental compositions that reveal absurdity, irony, humor, and drama. The juxtaposition of forms is a visceral experience, one which provokes a kind of emotional and aesthetic high.
