Legends of Greenwich Village: Bohemorama
Of Khuzami’s many murals, Bohemorama may be the one of which she’s the proudest. Commissioned by Morton Williams, the mural is a celebration of the history of Greenwich Village as a haven for artists, writers, and musicians. Khuzami painted several generations of bohemian legends as their younger selves, casually hanging out at a café, sharing a drink and a smoke. Each historical figure is engaged in some characteristic business: Edward Albee is drinking, Edie Sedgwick has a box of pills, Andy Warhol is clutching Polaroids, Allen Ginsburg is writing a love letter to Jack Kerouac, Marcel Duchamp plays chess with Jackson Pollock. Over the past twenty years Bohemorama has become one of New York City’s most recognizable and beloved murals, evoking Greenwich Village’s past as the cultural vanguard of America, synonymous with artistic and sexual freedom.
